Health, Safety & Environment Officer

Our client is one of the UK’s leading potato growers and packers based at Duns, Scottish Borders.  Due to continued growth they are sourcing an experienced HSE Officer.

THE ROLE:

  • Promote a culture of Safety throughout the Manufacturing and Growing.
  • Support the Business Unit Director in achieving high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance, protecting their people, their environment, and the business.
  • Support the Head of Health, Safety and Environment in the creation of the HSE strategy for the Manufacturing and Growing and the associated road map for delivery.
  • Build proactive relationships with, and play an active part in the Leadership Team
  • Promote the Manufacturing and Growing Values, lead by example and be an ambassador for the company.
  • Promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure compliance with the company’s OSH policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and best practice to achieve high quality assurance standards.
  • Review and extend range of company handbooks and SOP’s.
  • Support the updating and expansion of risk assessments to inform policy and procedure.
  • Assist with staff training and development.
  • Promote a positive and proactive safety culture amongst a multi-national workforce.
  • Communicate and liaise effectively with managers, colleagues, and other interested parties to achieve best outcomes.
  • Ensure coherent and safe systems of work are in place.
  • Plan work of, and managing, colleagues assigned to OSH duties such as Fire Marshalls and First Aiders.
  • Monitor operations/facilities/plant etc. across all sites.
  • Respond to incidents and accidents.
  • Follow up to such eventualities, remedial actions, insurance claims, etc.
  • Co-ordinate Staff Health and Safety and meetings.
  • Recognise developing areas of the business and react accordingly.

HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure you, your team and your visitors comply with all Health, Safety and Environmental procedures.
  • Follow the correct procedure if accidents occur.
  • Ensure your area of responsibility is always ‘audit ready’.
  • Attend and Lead site H&S meetings, as appropriate.
  • Report near misses, accidents, and unsafe practices or conditions to your line managers.
  • Ensure suitable personal protective equipment is provided and used in-line with Company policies.
  • Be responsible for your own safety and do not jeopardise the health and safety of others.
  • Correct, or report, unsafe practices or conditions.
  • Co-operate with other managers in maintaining a safe place of work.

ENVIRONMENTAL:

  • Understand and apply the companies Environmental Policy within your area of responsibility.
  • Reduce environmental waste where possible including but not limited to materials, food waste and energy.
  • Correct, or report, poor environmental practices or conditions.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Recognised Level 3 Occupational Health and Safety qualification, such as NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Previous experience of working in a health and safety role.
  • Hold good knowledge of legislation and approved codes of practice appertaining to occupational safety and health, both in Jersey and UK.
  • Has the ability to communicate constructively with colleagues at all levels of the company.
  • Excellent organisation, planning and project management skills.
  • Computer literate in all Microsoft applications.
